Today, Rxsolve Conflict has offices in Los Angeles (where Paul has practiced cardiology for 25+ years) and Nashville (where Jeff currently lives and practices anesthesia, after having spent most of his career working in the San Francisco Bay Area).
Jeff and Paul first met in L.A. during medical training, becoming fast friends. Over the years, in addition to having busy clinical practices, each became a trusted physician leader within their own medical groups, on their hospital medical staffs and in hospital administrative roles, including Board membership. They repeatedly saw that while some healthcare teams succeeded through collaboration, others were crippled by poor communication and recurrent conflict. As their careers progressed, Jeff and Paul found themselves wanting to better understand the roots of communication breakdown and conflict with the goal of creating safer and more productive healthcare workplaces.
Fast forward, and by coincidence, Paul and Jeff were each serving as hospital Chief Medical Officers just prior to and during the Covid pandemic. They began speaking more often with one another about the challenges between and among physicians, hospital-related groups and other stakeholders. In doing so, it became apparent that they shared a strong overlap in experience and philosophical approaches to communication and conflict resolution within healthcare, as well as a desire to share their experience and knowledge to help others.
In the past two years, monthly talks became weekly talks, as Paul and Jeff became formally trained in conflict resolution and communication training. Paul took mediation training at The Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine's Caruso School of Law. Jeff completed mediation training through Gary Friedman's Center for Understanding in Conflict. This training, along with his MBA from The Wharton School deepened Jeff's understanding of both the financial and emotional returns made possible in highly collaborative organizations.
Over the course of many conversations, Jeff and Paul saw the paucity of effective resources addressing conflict resolution in healthcare. They decided to join forces, thereby creating Rxsolve Conflict. Welcome! Bios below.
Dr. Paul Natterson is a board certified cardiologist with more than 25 years of clinical experience in practice at Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica CA. He has extensive experience in both hospital and medical staff leadership. Past positions have included hospital Medical Staff President and Vice President, hospital Chief Medical Officer, and member of the hospital Board of Directors. He has also served as President and Medical Director of Pacific Heart Institute, currently an 18 cardiologist private practice. His interest in conflict management and dispute resolution ultimately led to mediation training, including coursework at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University.
Dr. Jeff Stuart is an experienced physician executive whose roles have included leadership of a private medical group, Medical Director and Board Member of multiple surgery centers, and 3 years as the Chief Medical Officer of Washington Healthcare System in Fremont, CA. His three decades of experience, including having served as a hospital CMO through the pandemic, have given him extensive experience in operational planning, creating communication strategies and mitigating conflict in high stress unpredictable settings. Dr. Stuart has completed mediation training at the Center for Understanding Conflict in Marin County, Ca. A board certified anesthesiologist still in practice, he also holds an MBA from The Wharton School.
